Sapeurs pompiers, Modern Angels

Sapeurs Pompiers – that’s the French name we give these heroic people. In English, we would call them the Fire Brigade.

In France, it’s a well-respected institution that attracts the most honorable men and women. These professionals are under the control of the French Ministry of the Interior. They are frequently members of the military.

My brother-in-law Pascal is a firefighter in the Sapeurs Pompiers and an “adjudant chef” of his “Caserne”. I asked him if I could spend some time with him and his colleagues who are very passionate about their tremendously important jobs. Always generous, Pascal welcomed me with the approval of the big boss of St. Médard en Jalles (a small town near Lacanau, France) to take photos and meet his “guys”.

What an amazing day! Because of my past injuries from kitesurfing, snowboarding, and other sports, I have always regarded these brave souls as “angels” who have come to my aid every time I needed assistance. I truly believe that to do this job and give so much dedication and love, they must be modern day saints. Whether they are saving people from burning buildings or rescuing cats from trees, they deserve are utmost respect and support!
