On my way for my routine swim to Meads Bay, my favorite Anguilla’s beaches, what a view…
I drove back home to get my 5D and my 70/200 to get some images of her. Eclipse is the largest yacht in the world (163.5 metros or 536 ft). The value has been estimated at €340 million = US$475M. She was constructed by Blohm + Voss in Hamburg in Germany.

How High Dynamic Range Photography Gives You The Very Best Of Light And Dark Images

This first in a series of HDR tutorials will show you how high dynamic range photography (HDR photography) gives you the perfectly balanced photo of light and dark. Your eyes are able to see this naturally, and with the help of HDR software, you can now capture what you see. The key is to have a balance of bright highlights and dark shadows together. By taking the same photo with different stops, you will encompass the tonal detail of the entire series in one image. This is now possible with the new “merge to HDR” feature of Photoshop or Photomatix which will combine the series of bracketed exposures into a single image. This is why high dynamic range photography is so important to capture images. For this first lesson in HDR tutorials I will show you how I capture the source images.

Terms defined for beginners: Dynamic range is measured in stops which are simply the EV (exposure value) differences. Every stop is a doubling of the amount of light.

What You Need For HDR Photography:

• Shoot in RAW (my camera is Canon 5d MarkII)
• Edit In Adobe Photoshop Lightroom
• HDR Software (I use Photomatix)

HDR Tutorials Step One: The Source Images

There are 2 different ways I do this. One is to use the Auto Exposure Bracketing (AEB) setting on your camera to take the 3 source photos. The second is to work in the Manual setting to take a series of 5 to 7 images while adjusting from the stops from +2 to -2.

1 – How I Use Auto Exposure Bracketing For High Dynamic Range Photography

This is the option I use for outside day-time photos. I prefer to get steady by using walls, trees, or gates rather than a tripod, but use what you need to make sure you are holding the camera steady. This is important for the HDR software to work correctly.
Directions for Canon 5D Mark II

• Go to Menu (top left)
• Select the second tab from the left to see Expo.comp./AEB (select after your exposure compensation)
• Choose the option -2/+2
• Set up your camera on Av program for outside (get a large depth of field)
• Shoot F/16, ISO 50 and in RAW

I am loading my photos into Adobe Lightroom to select my best photos and organize my work flow by group of photos. I have built a script into this software for each different exposures to get a Tiff ProPhoto RGB, 16 bits file at 240 pixels for printing or less for website. All my files are saved into a folder on my desktop and ready to be "batch" with Photomatix.

Same as inside Lightroom, I have created some preferences with Photomatix as you can below. Remove ghost always selected as High, I always generate my HDR image "in background", that’s why I like this software compare to Nik or Photoshop. Don’t forget to select the number of images you wish to render, in this case, it’s always 3 images at the time. I got my best results with "fuse exposures with fusion/auto", prefer to edit my images with Adobe Lightroom. Click on run et voila

I am dropping my Tiff files into my Lightroom folder, synchronize this catalog to get these new images and after I am editing all of them with this software (it will be part of a new article where I will spend more time to explain my work flow in HDR)

2 – HDR tutorials: How I Use Manual Exposure Bracketing For HDR Photography

This way is my favourite and it’s why I use it as my main work flow for my architecture photos.
Directions:

• Set camera to Manual (M)
• Shoot F/16, ISO 50 and in RAW
• Take 5 to 7 images changing the exposure by +2/-2*

*I also take an image at -5 to get a maximum contrast shot for the background

NOTE ABOUT ISO: It is very important to shoot at the lower possible ISO (maximum 100 or 200 ISO). Otherwise, you will increase the noise in the image. I once tried using 800 during night images, with awful results!

Now you know you to take the images for high dynamic range photography in two ways. To get the best results in HDR photography, this is the most important step. No matter how good your HDR software is, having the best images to work with is crucial. Practice taking pictures this way so you can be ready for the next in my series of HDR tutorials which will show you how to manage your work flow in Lightroom.
